Biography

POISAL, John, a House Chaplain; born in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, W. Va., May 13, 1807; ordained in the Methodist Church in 1826; shoemaker; minister; newspaper owner; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-fifth Congress until his resignation on November 14, 1877 (October 15, 1877–November 14, 1877);* died June 25, 1882, in Baltimore, Md.; interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Baltimore, Md.

* Reverend John Poisal's last name has been spelled "Poisel" and "Poisol" in various editions of the Congressional Record. Poisal resigned from the Chaplaincy on Nov. 7, 1877, and was succeeded by Reverend W. P. Harrison on Nov. 9, 1877.
