Nov 02, 2017 | Communications •

Shortly after the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act was introduced, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) joined Neil Cavuto on Fox Business to discuss the House’s work to bring more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks to the American people. In the interview, she also shares some feedback from people she’s met on the road during her multi-state “Faces of Tax Reform” tour.

Tax Reform is about Providing Relief

We are about everyone in this country seeing tax relief. We continue to work through those details, but we are very excited about this day. There’s a lot of momentum. No matter who you are in this country, whether you’re a single mom or a small business owner — we want to give you tax relief.”

It’s been a Team Effort to Get us to this Historic Day

“There’s been a lot of work put into getting us to this place. Work between the House, the Senate, and the administration. We agreed on the framework several weeks ago that largely laid out those tax brackets, and our goal has been when we launched it today that we would be pulling in the same direction. Later on today I’ll be heading to the White House with President Trump where we are going to be doing another overview of the legislation and coming together. We have momentum, we’re going to keep the momentum going. We believe this is going to be an economic boom for America, but we also believe it’s going to help every family. It’s pro-family and it’s pro-economic growth.

We Want Tax Reform by Christmas — Here’s Why

“The President is very engaged. He’s been pushing us. He wants [tax reform] done and he’s echoed the sentiment in the House that it needs to be done by Christmas. We want to get this tax relief in place for families and small businesses all across this country so we can get the results — we can get more jobs created. Small businesses are the engine of this country, that’s where the jobs are created. And we prioritize small businesses that have had the highest effective tax rate of anyone in America. They’ve been ones really shouldering the tax burden. We also want to help families. The doubling of the standard deduction from $12,000 to $24,000 — your first $24,000 is tax-free. We want everyone to be dreaming again and to have more money in their pockets so they can decide how best to spend those dollars. And that’s really where we’ve been working hard with the President, with the Senate, with our members in the House, to answer all the questions, get the feedback, but be able to largely be in agreement as we move forward so we can get this on the President’s desk by Christmas.

If the President signs this by Christmas, immediately in January everyone will start seeing a higher paycheck because what is currently being pulled out of your check is going to be reduced. It would go into effect immediately on January 1, 2018 and families and individuals will notice it.

Democrats Should See the Potential of this Reform

“I hope [the Democrats] see that this is both pro-family and pro-economic growth. We want everybody to have an opportunity for a better life — to reach their full potential. Part of that is lifting the tax burden that we currently have in this country. We see jobs going overseas — companies that are becoming foreign companies, but were American-made companies. This is our time. People have been waiting a long time and I would welcome the Democrats to join us in this effort. This has been long overdue, it has huge potential, and we need them all to be a part of it.

“As Chair of the Republican Conference, I’ve been traveling to different states holding ‘Faces of Tax Reform’ forums, and the feedback has been so positive. I was in North Carolina, Michigan, I’m heading to Virginia this Friday, then Pennsylvania — people are so encouraged that Congress would be taking this action.”
