Another special moment from the Ocala Honor Flight this AM. When the veterans entered the Capitol Rotunda, the entire crowd of tourists visiting Washington saw them and broke into a spontaneous applause that went on for several minutes. That moment captured it all for me. We are free because of what these brave men and women gave for us... and the people present in the Capitol today hadn't forgotten that. The genuine show of appreciation really meant a lot to me.

Although we’ve done some great work in Washington over the past six years, there’s nothing quite like giving back to the community at home. I think it's important to remember that even a small gesture can go a long way for those most in need. For example, Wendy is constantly sifting through the surplus books when visiting the Library of Congress and then taking them back to places in the District. Earlier this week she was out at the Dawn Center, a place for victims of domestic and sexual violence, as well as the Hernando County Education Foundation and Spring Hill Public Library with the hope to make this holiday season just a little brighter for some of our local youngsters ! Many thanks to Shannon Sokolowski, Tammy Binker and others for helping us spread this cheer. God Bless.

Did anyone else catch the story about The Good Cemeterian on CBS Sunday Morning? I am sure you all have seen headstones in our Florida cemeteries that have been blackened by the elements, covered in grime, dirt and mold – to the point where the individual’s name and information is no longer legible. Well, Andrew Lumish from Tampa is determined to fix this problem. He devotes all of his free time to cleaning and restoring the headstones of veterans across our state so that their stories may never be forgotten. If you have a moment, take a look at the video in the link below – I found it touching and wanted to share it with you. This is just another inspiring example of a model American doing something simple to honor those that gave everything to serve our country.
