  State of the Union Essay Contest

  Each January, the President addresses a joint session of Congress to report on the “State of the Union.” And each year, Bernie invites high school students to submit an essay describing what they think are the most pressing issues facing our country, and what they would do to solve them. The 20 finalists participate in a roundtable discussion with Bernie at the Vermont statehouse, and have their essays entered into the official archive of Congress.

  “Vermont Days” at the Edward Kennedy Institute for U.S. Senate

  Each spring and fall, our office organizes a “Vermont Day” at the Kennedy Institute in Boston. The non-partisan Kennedy Institute offers students an immersive learning experience on democracy, civic engagement, and the legislative process. Students get to be a Senator for a day, debating legislation in a full-scale replica of the U.S. Senate chamber. We are always looking for new schools to participate!

  Internships

  Interns gain valuable experience by learning about the inner workings of the Senate and get a first-hand look at the legislative process. Full-time and part-time internships are available in Washington, D.C. and Burlington, Vt.

  Service Academy Nominations

  Vermont students who want to enter the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, or Merchant Marine Academies must first receive a nomination. Each year, Bernie is proud to nominate a group of exceptional young Vermonters for appointment to our nation’s military academies, in preparation for careers in service to our country.

  Vermont Youth Climate Summit at the University of Vermont

  For the fifth year, Bernie is pleased to serve as Honorary Co-Chair of the Vermont Youth Climate Summit, an event organized by UVM students and faculty. This summit brings together hundreds of high school students from across the state to learn about the challenges of climate change, one of the great issues of our time. Students then break into groups to create climate action plans for their respective schools. This is a great way to learn – and make real change!   College and Career Fairs

  Bernie has hosted College and Career Fairs all across Vermont to help students plan their future after high school. It is important to understand what kind of job training students may need for the jobs that are available in our changing economy. Maybe it’s a two-year associate degree, or a certificate or credential program, or perhaps an apprenticeship. Or maybe it is a four-year college degree. These fairs feature workshops and information tables on topics such as choosing a college, applying for financial aid, as well as apprenticeship and job training opportunities.

  Choral Concert & Town Meeting on Arts and Education

  For the past four years, Bernie has organized a concert that showcases choirs from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges from across Vermont. This wonderful event not only celebrates the achievements of our Vermont student choruses, but it also serves as a reminder of how important art and music are for our children’s education. We are always looking for new choirs to participate!

  Library of Congress

  The Library of Congress has available at all times, for donation to eligible organizations and institutions, surplus books which are not needed for the Library's own uses. Congressional offices may request and ship books to nonprofit educational institutions in their state. This program is free to participate in and only requires Librarians to specify which genres they are interested in receiving and the appropriate place to mail books. If you are interested in participating in this program please contact Ann_Clancy@sanders.senate.gov to submit a request.
