U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., spoke to President Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Labor, Alex Acosta, about the importance of job corps programs and equal pay.

During the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing for Acosta’s nomination, Enzi talked about the importance that the Job Corps program plays in communities around the country. Enzi noted that Wyoming was the last state to get a Job Corps center, which provides comprehensive education and job training for young men and women ages 16 to 24.

“The Wind River Job Corps Center in Riverton is focusing on energy industry training, and that is heavy equipment, mechanics, welding and other things that are tied to the economy of Wyoming,” Enzi said “So their job placement is tremendous.”

Enzi also mentioned the importance of job training when it comes to the issue of ensuring equal pay for women. Specifically Enzi noted the success of programs such as CLIMB Wyoming, which supports low-income single mothers to discover self-sufficiency through career training and placement. In this program, Enzi said, they are able to get jobs that allow them to make anywhere from $18 to $25 an hour or more.

“What we’ve got to do is get people moving up the ladder to where they are getting paid what they ought to be getting paid,” Enzi said.

The exchange came on Wednesday at the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing held to consider Acosta’s nomination.
