This was a productive week in the #houseofrepresentatives. Four major pieces of legislation passed, three of which now head to the President’s desk to be signed into law. All four bills had bipartisan support. ✅National Defense Authorization Act -Provides the members of our military with the tools they need to confront global threats and keep our country safe. -Largest pay increase for our troops in 9 years. ✅Right to Try -Gives patients with a terminal illness the option to try experimental treatment if all other options have been exhausted. ✅Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act -Provides regulatory relief for Main Street banks. -Improves consumer protections for those with student loans. ✅Childhood Cancer STAR Act -Most comprehensive legislation addressing pediatric cancer ever passed by Congress.

I held an informational event today for first responders in our region on the appropriate procedures when encountering dangerous narcotics like fentanyl. Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy James Carroll and OH State Highway Patrol Crime Lab Director Brandon Werry spoke to the members of law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs about ways they can keep themselves safe.

This week, I voted to pass funding legislation that would keep our government open and secure our border. Unfortunately, because every Democrat in the Senate is refusing to support this bill, we have now entered a partial government shutdown. Since Congress already passed a number of appropriations bill this year, 75% of our government, including our military, will be unaffected by the shutdown.

That being said, Members of Congress shouldn’t be receiving their paycheck while others, including our border patrol agents, are not receiving theirs. I have asked the Chief Administrative Officer to withhold my pay during this partial shutdown.

I urge the Senate to take the actions necessary to open the government and secure the border.
