Recent Activity

December 13, 2018 Press Release
President Trump has said he “will take the mantle of shutting down” the federal government to secure $5 billion for his wasteful wall. If Trump and the Republicans follow through on this threat, the resulting government shutdown will harm American families, businesses, and communities.
July 27, 2018 Press Release
Through 12 Committee markups this year, House Appropriations Committee Democrats have offered nearly 150 amendments to stand up for our values and push back on President Trump and the Republicans’ backwards agenda. While Republicans have defeated many of these important amendments, House Democrats have succeeded in forcing important debates and putting Republicans on the record, laying down a marker for the battles that lie ahead.
July 25, 2018 Press Release
Unfortunately, there are significant parts of the bill where we are not in agreement which prevent me from being able to support the bill in its current form. From a taxpayer perspective, the most prominent area of concern is the $4.9 billion in the bill for new border fencing.
July 25, 2018 Press Release

Thank you, Chairman Yoder, Ranking Member Roybal-Allard, and Chairman Frelinghuysen for your work on this bill.

July 19, 2018 Press Release
The family separation fiasco of the last several weeks is testament to the need for careful oversight of the department’s activities. The administration’s zeal to aggressively enforce immigration law can never be an excuse to ignore the fundamental civil rights of individuals, including the right to keep one’s family intact.
July 19, 2018 Press Release
It is outrageous that House Republicans have prioritized unnecessary funds for President Trump’s border wall and cruel immigration policies rather than fighting terrorism through substantial new investments in first responder grants or growing the economy and creating jobs through job training, making college more affordable, or research and development initiatives.
July 18, 2018 Press Release
“The American people sent us to Congress to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars, not fritter away federal funding on divisive spending based on an uninformed campaign promise. This bill is completely unacceptable and Democrats will oppose it.”
June 19, 2018 Press Release
House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Nita Lowey (D-NY), Commerce-Justice-Science Subcommittee Ranking Member José E. Serrano (D-NY), Labor-Health and Human Services-Education Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and Homeland Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) today sent a letter to their Republican counterparts demanding a hearing on the use of federal funds for the Trump administration’s family separation policy.
July 17, 2017 Press Release
While other bills have been severely cut, the 2018 Homeland Security Appropriations bill would waste $1.6 billion on the President’s boondoggle of a border wall and more than $700 million on thousands of new detention beds and a thousand new ICE enforcement officers, priorities that do nothing to make communities more secure.
July 12, 2017 Press Release
With all of these procedural roadblocks hindering our path forward, one might think the majority would produce bills that could possibly gain support from Democrats, by for example, not funding a wasteful and useless border wall or a deportation force separating children from their families. Yet that has not happened.
