JACKSONVILLE, FLA – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) will host a Military Academy Day on Friday, September 21 from 5:30 p.m.- 8 p.m. in Jacksonville. Recruiters and current cadets from the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marines Academy, as well as the Marion Military Institute, will be in attendance to discuss the application and admissions process. Rep. Lawson’s staff will also be on hand to answer questions about the nomination process.

WASHINGTON DC – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) is now accepting submissions for the 2018 Congressional App Challenge. This annual district-wide competition, hosted by members of Congress, is a public effort to encourage students to learn how to code.

“I am pleased to participate in this year’s Congressional App Challenge,” Rep. Lawson said. “Teaching students how to code at a younger age prepares them for today’s world. There are so many jobs that use code directly and are looking to hire individuals who are skilled in this platform.”

Darius Alexander Jansen, Amari Jaquay and Reginald Stark Maffett III will continue their education at the prestigious military academy in Colorado. All three students received a nomination from Rep. Lawson.

Al Lawson’s James Weldon Johnson Historical Preservation Act, which designates the birthplace of James Weldon Johnson a national landmark. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Congressman Al Lawson (FL-05) announced Stanton College Preparatory School freshman Jaylen Thomas as the grand prize winner of Florida’s Fifth Congressional District Art Competition. Thomas’ winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol along with first-place winners from congressional districts across the country. Thomas and a guest will fly to Washington, D.C., next month to attend a congressional reception and see the unveiling of his artwork in the U.S. Capitol.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-5) introduced the Student Opportunity Act to provide economic relief for those who have student loans.

His bill would make it possible for people with high federal student loan debt to refinance their loans at a lower rate, and it would ensure future students can afford loan financing. It also would eliminate the tax penalty for loan balance forgiveness.
