U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., and his wife Diana paid tribute to American veterans and their families today by participating in Veterans Day events in Guernsey and Torrington. Below are excerpts from Senator Enzi’s speech as prepared for delivery at the events.

“As we gather today, in addition to all those who have served, we are reminded of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their very lives in the defense of our nation.

“As we remember them, we call to mind the sad and unfortunate truth that war hits a state like Wyoming especially hard.  States like our own, with a population spread out over such wide open spaces, have a fellowship among our citizens that is not always present in the other states.  It is the strength of the ties that bind us together that makes us feel the anguish of a family’s loss across the state just as strongly as we would if they lived across the street from us or been a member of our own extended family.

“When you are in church and you are thanking God for the blessings you have received, remember to thank God for the blessings of liberty and ask him to bless our veterans who have given so much to make our nation what it is today.

“Veterans Day has to be more than just a three-day weekend.  We owe that to our veterans.  It should be a time of remembrance and appreciation.  A time to acknowledge and thank our veterans.  But it shouldn’t be for just these days.  Make a pledge that you will thank our veterans throughout the year.  Make a promise to yourself that you will never forget those who have served and sacrificed so much for you.

“God bless all our nation’s veterans.  May their efforts be long remembered and never forgotten.  We couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of our veterans.  May God bless them all and keep them safe and free from harm.”
