As you may know, National Voter Registration Day is on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.  Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will host events across the country to ensure awareness of voter registration opportunities and to equip voters for Election Day on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. I invite you to join me on September 25, 2012 to discuss the importance of protecting the fundamental, Constitutional right to vote. While National Voter Registration Day events will be taking place across the country, the state of Missouri has its own unique voter registration laws which can be viewed here. 

Immediately following the 2008 Election, many states enacted or proposed strict voting laws that impose unfair restrictions on eligible voters across the country.  It has been estimated that restrictive voting legislation could prevent as many as 5 million people from registering to vote or from casting a ballot this election year. Given the lack of evidence of voter fraud in our nation, it is clear these laws do more to suppress the rights of voters than to safeguard our voting system.  Some states require voters to show government-issued photo identification, though as many as one in ten voters do not have this form of identification. Other states have cut back on early voting, a process disproportionately used by millions of disabled, seniors, and people of color.

Voting is a fundamental right for all American citizens, and these restrictive voting laws threaten to disenfranchise large groups of civic minded voters. I am committed to doing all I can to protect voting rights and to ensure that no eligible voter is turned away from the ballot box.  I am joining my colleagues to work diligently to ensure all Americans are properly registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day and most importantly, by our state’s voter registration deadline: October 10th at 5:00 pm.
