The two accompanied Trump to a political rally at Selfridge Air Force Base in April, where the President, after being lobbied by the two, addressed his support for building a new lock in Sault Ste. Marie.
"Hardly a family that you talk to hasn’t had a loved one or someone they know of been affected by this," says Congressman John Moolenaar, who was at the drug take back in Freeland.
“I’m very optimistic because the president fully embraced it, the Army Corps of Engineers has demonstrated it for security and economics. Things are aligned in such a way that we will move forward on it. But in Washington you’re never done until you’re done,” Moolenaar, said.
“For agriculture, I think it’s a win, and for the auto industry, it’s a win. It’s a really positive step forward,” Moolenaar said. On the other hand, he added, “there is a lot of work left to do” regarding trade deals between the U.S. and the European Union and China.
“After more than a decade of inaction in Washington, the Soo Locks are receiving the attention they deserve and progress is being made,” said U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Midland in a release.
“I was impressed by the dedication and commitment of the staff. It was also wonderful to see the community’s strong support of The Lion’s Den’s life-saving mission to help victims break free of addiction,” Moolenaar wrote in a statement to the Resorter.
"For me to be able to personally hand that to her on behalf of a grateful nation means a lot,” Moolenaar said.
"It was Brenda, Harry's daughter, who is here today, who reached out to my office," said Moolenaar. "In doing so, she helped ensure that our country continues to honor the men and women who have served our country."
“We want to assist in honoring our veterans in every way. It’s a way of honoring their families for their sacrifice, nut it also speaks a very powerful message to future generations that this kind of sacrifice will not be forgotten,” he said.
“With the president coming out showing his support, Homeland Security showing support, and now, the Army Corps of Engineers, I think we’ve had a lot of progress on that front,” he said. “It’s good for Michigan.
