Congressman Mike Quigley

Representing the 5th District of Illinois

Congressional App Challenge

Congressman Quigley is excited to announce Gabrielle Chang, a junior at Hinsdale Central High School, as the winner of the 2018 Congressional App Challenge for Illinois' Fifth Congressional District. Chang’s app, Chi Trip, aims to encourage tourism in Chicago by providing quick and reliable information about many of the city’s most popular sights and attractions, which can then be added to a personalized list of places to visit.

Chang taught herself how to code using Google and YouTube tutorials and spent countless hours over the course of the summer building Chi Trip, her first phone app, from scratch. She hopes to expand the app’s availability in the future to include other cities, as well as a map feature that would provide customized directions to users’ favorite locations depending on the mode of travel. “Congratulations to Gabrielle Change for winning the 2018 Congressional App Challenge with her brilliantly designed Chi Trip app,” said Rep. Mike Quigely. “She developed a useful tool that celebrates Chicago by helping tourists and residents alike see and experience all that our great city has to offer, and I encourage everyone to download and enjoy it.”

Contestants were judged by Chas Jhin, Vice President of Engineering for Cameo, and Megan Uithoven, Head of Community and Product for GrowIt!

Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM fields. This competition allows students to compete with peers in their own district by creating and exhibiting their software application, or ‘app’, for mobile, tablet, or computer device on a platform of their choice.
