Langevin Opposes Rescissions Package Cutting Children’s Health Funding

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the following statement after opposing the $15 billion Republican rescissions package, which passed the House by a vote of 210-206:

“Five months ago, Republicans passed a tax bill that primarily benefits large corporations and the wealthiest Americans while adding $1.9 trillion to our national debt. Today, Republicans are attempting to claim the mantle of fiscal responsibility by passing this misguided legislation, which they optimistically claim will save less than one percent of that total. This cynicism is astounding. What’s worse, the prime target of the GOP cuts is the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides vital care to kids in Rhode Island and around the country.  It also includes cuts to public housing, infrastructure, and clean energy research, foreclosing the opportunity to reinvest in these critical priorities.

“Instead of feigning fiscal responsibility and rushing this partisan legislation to the floor, Republicans ought to put politics aside and engage with Democrats to make the tough choices we need to rein in our debt.”
