U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., offered an amendment to the highway bill today that would help address the lack of revenue in the Highway Trust Fund that is needed to pay for America’s bridges, roads and infrastructure.

The amendment addresses the revenue needs by allowing the gasoline tax to be adjusted with inflation. Enzi notes that the transportation bill is currently being paid for with a budget gimmick that provides for two years of spending while taking ten years to raise the revenue.

The gasoline tax was the original mechanism for funding transportation projects through the Highway Trust Fund and has not been increased since 1993.
