Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi

Representing the 8th District of Illinois

Despite Negative Feedback From Working Families, House Republicans Still Feeling SALTy

September 28, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.- On Friday, September 28, House Republicans passed legislation (H.R. 6760) to permanently cap the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction at $10,000 for both individuals and joint filers. This severe limitation applies to state and local income, property, and sales taxes. According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, this legislation will increase the deficit by $631 billion over the next 10 years. Congressman Krishnamoorthi released the following statement:

“I am dismayed by yet another effort to permanently roll back critical protections for hard-working families in my state. One third of Illinoisans rely on the state and local tax deduction, an important provision that reduces the tax burden on middle class families while also providing critical government services towards healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The average SALT deduction in Illinois is well over the $10,000 cap that my House Republican colleagues want to make permanent, a devastating proposal that will have long-term economic consequences. I voted against this misguided bill today, and will continue to promote tax fairness, economic growth, and community development.”
