RECENT VOTE
Conference Report on H.R. 1591:
U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act
April 25, 2007
On Wednesday April 25th, the House considered the Conference Report on H.R. 1591: "U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act". This legislation is the result of negotiations between House and Senate conferees on the bills passed last month by each chamber. As you know, I supported last month's legislation because although it did not go far enough for me, I thought it was a significant step toward ending the war in Iraq and bringing our troops home. I voted YES on the Conference Report.
For me, the most important component of this legislation is the requirement that troop withdrawal begin by October 1st with the goal of completing that withdrawal by March 2008.
President Bush has been threatening to veto this bill for weeks and I fully expect that he will do so. Regardless, Congress will deliver an important message to the President by sending this legislation to his desk. In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue to do everything I can to end this war. With today's vote in the House we are closer than we have ever been to ending this war.
