Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: Firing of Attorney General Sessions Raises Serious Questions That Should Be Investigated By Congress

November 8, 2018
Press Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to the announcement that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been fired, and that former Chief of Staff to Sessions, Matthew Whitaker, will now serve as the acting Attorney General:

“President Trump’s firing of Attorney General Sessions raises serious questions and underscores the need for a thorough and public accounting of the President’s actions. I welcome incoming Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler’s investigation into this matter, and I look forward to addressing this on the Oversight Committee as well. This is the Administration’s newest attempt to undermine and end Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and his selection of Matthew Whitaker as acting Attorney General only reaffirms it.  In light of acting Attorney General Whitaker’s outspoken support for efforts to discredit the Russia investigation, he should recuse himself from any involvement and Congress should thoroughly investigate these events.

As the President decides on his replacement for Attorney General Sessions, it is of the upmost importance that the nominee will pledge to protect Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation and that Congress takes immediate additional action to further ensure the integrity of the investigation”
