Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Ranking Member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, spoke on the Senate floor today in support of an amendment to repeal a costly new 1099 IRS tax form reporting mandate imposed by the new health care law.

“Under the new health care reform law, 40 million businesses will have to submit onerous and duplicative 1099 tax forms. This August, I toured small businesses across Wyoming to get a sense of what federal legislation is doing to help or hinder them. I saw firsthand what kind of struggles they deal with every day and what is working for them and what is not,” Enzi said.

“The last thing we should do in Washington is hurt these businesses by passing legislation that takes resources away from growing the business and puts it into more tax paperwork. Section 9006 of the new health care reform law could mean hundreds and hundreds of extra 1099 tax forms every year for businesses to worry about. That is why I am a co-sponsor of this amendment, which will fully repeal the 1099 paperwork mandate.”

The Senate voted 46-52 against proceeding to debate on amendment, #4596, sponsored by Senator Mike Johanns, R-Neb., that would repeal section 9006 of the new health care law. Enzi will continue to work on fixing this harmful provision and is still hopeful it can be done before the extra IRS tax form collection is required.
