WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Mike Enzi, John Barrasso and Representative Cynthia Lummis, all R-Wyo., applauded the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) decision to maintain surgical services for veterans at the Cheyenne Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
Earlier this year, the VA underwent national site visits of VA medical facilities with the intent of reducing surgical services at some VA medical facilities based on the facilities’ review. The Wyoming delegation worked with the VA over the past six months to ensure the Cheyenne VAMC is in compliance with surgical standards.
“Wyoming veterans have Sheridan and Cheyenne to choose from so it is essential that each VA hospital in the state have high quality and available services. I am pleased the VA will continue surgical services in Cheyenne and I applaud the work of the delegation and the governor to be sure the Administration knows just how important surgical services in Cheyenne mean to Wyoming vets,” said Enzi.
“I applaud VA Secretary Shinseki for allowing Wyoming to maintain its Level 2 and Level 3 surgical capabilities in Cheyenne,” Barrasso said. “Sending our veterans out of state for care is not fair especially given the sacrifices they have already made for our country. I look forward to working with the Wyoming veteran service organizations and the VA to improve the level and quality of care for our veterans.”
“Our nation’s veterans deserve access to the finest quality health care. Wyoming’s open spaces already require our veterans to drive long distances to receive care -- it’s important the services are maintained in Cheyenne,” Lummis said. “I will continue to work with the VA throughout its review. Washington has a sacred responsibility to our service men and women who have fought, and continue to fight for the safety and security of our country. Our veterans stayed dedicated to their mission, the VA has the responsibility to follow through with its duty.”
