Wyoming schools receive educational honors

Burlington and Sheridan schools among nation’s top

September 15, 2009

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Mike Enzi and John Barrasso and Representative Cynthia Lummis, all R-Wyo., applauded the work of two Wyoming schools for being named a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2009 by the U.S. Department of Education. Burlington Elementary School in Burlington and Sagebrush Elementary School in Sheridan were selected as two out of 314 public and private schools in the nation to receive the award.

“Wyoming schools and teachers have always been extremely committed to teaching our children and I’m pleased to see these schools recognized at a national level for their efforts,” said Enzi, Ranking Member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. “This award is a reflection of not only the schools and teachers but the students, families and communities that all play a role in the education of our children in our state.”

"Sheridan's Sagebrush Elementary and Burlington Elementary have distinguished themselves as the best of the best," Barrasso said. "Each of these students, teachers, parents and communities are serving as role models of educational excellence. Sheridan and Burlington's hard work and committment to education will provide strong foundations for the future of their students."

“I applaud the students, parents and educators associated with the schools in Burlington and Sheridan for their amazing achievement,” Lummis said. “A quality education for our children is absolutely essential to their futures and ours. I encourage them to keep up the good work and not let up.”

The principal and a teacher from each school will be invited to attend a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November where they will receive a plaque and a flag to acknowledge their achievements as a Blue Ribbon School.

The Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools that make significant progress in closing the achievement gap or whose students achieve at very high levels. The schools are selected based on the improvement of students with disadvantaged backgrounds, students who achieve in the top 10 percent on state tests and private schools that are in the top 10 percent of the nation.

Since 2004, Wyoming schools in Cheyenne, Casper, Cody, Gillette, Pinedale, Powell and Yoder have received Blue Ribbon status.
