WASHINGTON – In a sharply-worded letter to President-elect Donald J. Trump, Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay (D) Missouri joined with 169 of his U.S. House colleagues to urge Mr. Trump to rescind alt-right leader Steve Bannon’s appointment as White House Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor to the President. Although invited to join, no House Republicans signed the letter.
“White nationalism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and hate have no place in our society, and they certainly should not find safe harbor in the White House.” said the Congressman. “The appointment of Mr. Bannon deepens division and encourages dangerous extremists. And it sends a disturbing message about what kind of president Donald Trump wants to be,” said Clay, Missouri’s senior Democrat in Congress. “I am grateful that so many of my colleagues joined in this request today. I hope that the President-elect will reconsider this decision and put healing our country ahead of rewarding political extremism.”
