Dear Friend,

Thank you for the opportunity to update you on the work of the 115th Congress. I trust this finds you and your family well, as we work together to bring Hoosier common sense to Washington.

Special thanks to the speakers from the Opioid Resource Summit.  Dustin Noonkester of Brady’s Hope, Terry Cook of Indiana’s Dept. of Mental Health and Addictions, and Kristinia Love of the Morgan County’s Substance Abuse Council.

After formal remarks, the resource fair opened up to booths with information from various Hoosier organizations that are providing relief.  Hoosiers should take comfort knowing that resources are available to those in need.

A special thank you to the members of our law enforcement community who attended.  They deal with the consequences of this epidemic every day and are fighting to keep Hoosiers safe from the scourge of illegal drugs.

Keeping Social Security Solvent

I recently introduced H.R. 6532, the Making Disability Insurance Work for All Americans Act. This bill is the first serious proposal to outline a conservative way to keep the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Trust Fund solvent for decades to come.

I am calling on Congress to pass this legislation to support those who truly need help transitioning back into the workforce so they can continue to build better lives for themselves and their families.  The revival of this program ensures protection of our social security and the lives dependent on it.  I will continue fighting for bills like this one that support American families without adding debt to our future generations.”

H.R. 6532 includes major reforms such as transitioning new beneficiaries to flat a monthly benefit and increases the frequency of continuing disability reviews.  It establishes that disability attorneys must negotiate their fee directly with applicants, ending the current system that leads to unnecessary delays and appeals so attorneys can get more money.  Finally, it includes common-sense reforms, such as updating the medical vocational grid to better capture emerging industries and new treatments, and allows SSA to use social media when making determinations on who is eligible for disability.  These needed reforms have received the support of both Heritage Action and FreedomWorks.

Support Judge Kavanaugh with Lou Dobbs

Thursday night, I spoke with Lou Dobbs on his show about multiple topics, including the confirmation hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh.  Judge Kavanaugh was nominated by President Trump to serve on the United States Supreme Court in July.

Dobbs

Rather than give Judge Kavanaugh a fair shot, many Democrats rushed to be the first to announce their opposition to his nomination in July.  Now, two months after promising to never vote for Judge Kavanaugh, several of these Senators were claiming they did not have enough information to make up their minds.

Should they have examined his record, they would have discovered an extremely qualified nominee.  Judge Kavanaugh is a respected legal scholar, judge, and a community man.  President Trump has made a stellar nomination with his pick of Judge Kavanaugh.

As your representative and as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, one of the great honors that I have is nominating promising young Hoosiers for positions to military academies.  This year's nominations are due by September 14.
