Hungry for Growth

Dear Friends,

Nationwide, there is a growing demand for fresh, locally-sourced foods and the restaurants that serve them. Consumers value “buying local” and supporting small business, and they also want to know where their food comes from and how it is being grown or raised.

That trend is evident here in Rhode Island, and that’s good news for jobs, the economy and the delicious food being grown in our backyard.

There are more than 1,200 farms in the Ocean State. Those farms equal jobs. Those farms also provide the foundation for our growing food economy. Farmers, fishermen, food manufacturers and restaurateurs are interconnected, and success for one can translate into success for all. I launched my first RI Food Week tour in February, and it ignited a passion for our food economy and the potential it holds. My follow-up tour last month reaffirmed my belief that if Rhode Island is to grow stronger, we must continue to nurture all of our economic strengths. There are several areas with growth potential, and the food economy is one. Let us seize this opportunity to make our state a destination for food businesses and food lovers.

To learn more about the food businesses I have worked with, follow me on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

            Sincerely,

           Rep. Langevin's Signature

Getting Around
Public transportation is a gateway to employment, health care and community-based resources for all Americans and for people with disabilities in particular, which is why transit accessibility is crucial if we are to foster a more equal, inclusive society. As a founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus, I introduced the Transit Accessibility Innovation Act to encourage transportation systems to address deficiencies in service for individuals with disabilities.

Economic Boost
I was proud to announce last month that Rhode Island will receive $1.57 million in federal funding to help boost and diversify the state’s economy. With these funds, Commerce RI will map out an economic development plan that supports market diversification and helps prepare defense manufacturers and other industries for the future. As a longtime proponent of closing the skills gap, I was particularly pleased to see workforce development and training included in this plan.
