March 2017

  • H.R. 520 - National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act (Rep. Mark Amodei, R-NV): This bill, which has been introduced in prior Congresses, aims to cut red tape and streamline the permitting process for mineral development. This expedited but responsible process would enable miners in the United States to compete with those in Canada and overseas. Consequently, investors would no longer be deterred from investing in American mineral development, which is now fraught with uncertainty.
  • H.R. 60 - Encourage New Legalized Immigrants to Start Training (ENLIST) Act (Rep. Jeff Denham, R-CA): This bill authorizes the enlisment of aliens who are unlawfully present in the United States and were younger than 15 years of age when they initially entered the United States, but who are otherwise qualified for enlistment. The legislation also provides a mechanism by which such persons, by reason of their honorable service in the Armed Forces, may be lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
  • H.J.Res. 87 - Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Environmental Protection Agency relating to "Approval, Disapproval and Promulgation of Air Quality Implementation Plans; Partial Approval and Partial Disapproval of Air Quality IMplementation Plans and Federal Implementation Plan; Utah; Revisions to Regional Haze State Implementation Plan; Federal Implementation Plan for Regional Haze" (Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-UT): Under this resolution of disapproval, the named rule would have no force or effect.
  • H.Res. 195 - Expressing the commitment of the House of Representatives to conservative environmental stewardship (Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY): This resolution commits the House of Representatives to work constructively, using the American tradition of ingenuity, innovation, and exceptionalism, to create and support economically viable, and broadly supported private and public solutions to study and address the causes and effects of measured changes to our global and regional climates, including mitigation efforts and efforts to balance human activities that have been found to have an impact.
  • H.R. 825 - Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act of 2017 (Rep. Paul Gosar, R-AZ): This bipartisan legislation would expedite the permitting process for renewable energy development on public lands. It would also direct money collected from renewable energy projects to states, counties, and conservation programs. Ultimately, the bill seeks to incentivize clean energy production on public lands and ensure local communities reap the benefits.
  • H.R. 931 - Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2017 (Rep. Chris Collins, R-NY): This bill would require the CDC to create a voluntary registry of firefighters to collect history and occupational information that can be linked to existing data in state cancer registries. Firefighters currently experience significantly higher rates of certain types of cancer, but little reasearch has been done to explain why. The registry would be used to improve monitoring of cancer among firefighters and the CDC would then develop guidance for states to effectively use the registry to implement practices designed to reduce cancer rates.
  • H.R. 19 - To establish in the Smithsonian Institution a comprehensive women's history museum (Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY): This bill, numbered H.R. 19 in honor of the 19th Amendment, is to establish a museum for the collection, study, and establishment of programs relating to women's contributions to various fields and throughout different periods of history that have influenced the direction of the United States. The museum will be constructed through non-federal funds.
  • H.R. 1698 - Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act (Rep. Ed Royce, R-CA): H.R. 1698 would impose additional sanctions against Iran for violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which prohibits Iran from undertaking any activity relating to ballistic missiles. Shortly after enacting the JCPOA, Iran tested ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads. Holding them accountable for such actions would send a clear message that the JCPOA does not enable them to do as they please, and that the other obligations still stand.
