PRESS RELEASEFederal Building to be Named in Honor of Former House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr.November 28, 2012 Today Congressman Mike Capuano helped facilitate House passage of H.R. 6604, which names the federal building located on 2nd Street, SW between C and D Streets SW in Washington, D.C. after former House Speaker Tip O’Neill. Tip was Speaker of the House from 1977-1987 and would have celebrated his 100th birthday on December 9th. Rep. Capuano managed the House floor time during passage of the bill as many Members reflected on Tip’s legacy as Speaker. “It is my great honor to serve in the district that Tip represented so effectively in Washington for so many years. His legacy is everywhere, in neighborhoods all over the 8th district and throughout the halls of Congress. It is fitting that this building be named for one of our country’s greatest House Speakers,” stated Congressman Mike Capuano. Congressman Capuano continued, “Tip possessed many qualities that I admired, and I think one of his most impressive skills was the ability to disagree with his colleagues on substantive issues but still seek common ground whenever possible. That’s how progress is made and Tip recognized that more than most. Tip’s approach to the legislative process and his willingness to listen to the other side are qualities that every elected official should strive to possess. Tip never forget who elected him and why he was serving in Washington. Tip has left an impressive legacy as Speaker and as a towering advocate for his constituents. The naming of this federal building is a small way for Congress to say thank you for his years of service.” Contact: Alison M. Mills (Rep. Capuano) 617-621-6208
