Congress returned this week from a 2-week district work period. I spent the entire time in the District meeting with constituents and discussing important issues of the day.
Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act of 2009
This week the Financial Services Committee marked up H.R. 627: Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act of 2009. This measure provides needed consumer protections from unfair and arbitrary practices used by credit card companies. The bill requires credit card companies to give consumers sufficient notice of interest rate increases and prohibits increasing rates on preexisting balances. It prohibits double charging consumers on parts of purchases they already paid off and bans excessive fees. I am proud to cosponsor H.R. 627 and voted YES on this legislation in committee. H.R. 627 passed the committee by a vote of 48-19. The House is expected to consider this bill on the floor next week.
National Water Research and Development Initiative Act of 2009
On Thursday the House passed H.R. 1145: National Water Research and Development Initiative Act. This bill establishes a new initiative that aims to coordinate federal water research and development. It contains new programs like a national water census and information technology systems that will enhance the supply and quality of water. The legislation also ensures that we have an effective future national water strategy that uses federal research and development dollars efficiently and eliminates redundant programs. I voted YES. H.R. 1145 passed in the House and the entire vote is recorded below:
