Education and Opportunity
During my time in Congress, I have been a strong advocate for the advancement and reform of our education system. I believe that the parents and communities should be in charge of educating our children – not the federal government.
That’s why I cosponsored H.R. 899, a bill to terminate the Department of Education. Bureaucrats in Washington aren’t able to address needs of individual students. Getting rid of the Department of Education empowers local school boards, teachers and parents to decide how students are educated.
In the same way, it’s time we eliminate Common Core Standards from our schools. It fails to address concerns from parents, administrators and teachers on the front lines of education. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to education. Each student learns differently and our education system should be individualized to best fit their needs.
Over the years, I have fought for our universities in the state of Louisiana, as well as career and technical education (CTE). I have worked hard to secure grants and funding for the universities and colleges in Louisiana. 2018 grants include:
- $2.2 million for Grambling State University STEM programs
- $1.3 million for Louisiana Tech’s cybersecurity initiative
- $275,000 for ULM mobile weather lab
