Education and Opportunity

During my time in Congress, I have been a strong advocate for the advancement and reform of our education system.  I believe that the parents and communities should be in charge of educating our children – not the federal government.

That’s why I cosponsored H.R. 899, a bill to terminate the Department of Education. Bureaucrats in Washington aren’t able to address needs of individual students. Getting rid of the Department of Education empowers local school boards, teachers and parents to decide how students are educated.

In the same way, it’s time we eliminate Common Core Standards from our schools. It fails to address concerns from parents, administrators and teachers on the front lines of education. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to education. Each student learns differently and our education system should be individualized to best fit their needs.

Over the years, I have fought for our universities in the state of Louisiana, as well as career and technical education (CTE). I have worked hard to secure grants and funding for the universities and colleges in Louisiana. 2018 grants include:

Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, announced Tuesday that the University of Louisiana at Monroe is receiving a nearly $275,000 federal grant to buy new weather satellite equipment.

The National Science Foundation awarded the Major Research Instrumentation award to ULM so that the university can buy a compact, portable Doppler Wind Lidar system. This equipment uses lasers to study atmospheric characteristics such as wind, turbulence and aerosols. It will allow ULM to better research storms and air quality to improve public safety and human health.

WASHINGTON - Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, today announced nearly $400,000 in grant funding from the US Department of Agriculture for education and workforce development projects across Northeast and Central Louisiana.
 
The USDA rural development grants will fund three projects that will benefit residents in 14 different parishes, 11 of which are in Louisiana’s 5thCongressional District.

WASHINGTON - Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, announced today the Economic Development Agency will award a $400,000 grant aimed at creating jobs, developing entrepreneurs and growing small businesses in Central Louisiana.

The grant was awarded to the Central Louisiana Economic Development Alliance (CLEDA) to develop the Center for Innovation and Prosperity. It is expected to create 250 jobs and cultivate $500,000 in private investment.
