Like everyone in our country, I want a quality health care system at an affordable cost. Unfortunately, the Affordable Care Act hasn’t fulfilled its promise to achieve this. Instead, it has increased the cost of health care for millions of Americans and is threatening our economic stability as health care spending continues to grow. It should come as no surprise that a law written by big insurance companies, big hospitals chains, and others who profit from the health care system; that contains burdensome taxes, raising premiums for all Americans and limiting plan options; a law that considers 30 hours a full workweek, and that cuts funding for Medicare is, at best, deeply flawed.

While there are positive aspects of the ACA – like the ability to keep young people on their parents’ plans until the age of 26, guaranteed coverage for preexisting conditions, and protections against gender discrimination – there are also important things that need to be reformed to put patients at the center of our health care system. In Congress, we are working to ensure that patient-centered health care is a priority and the doctor-patient relationship is the driving force in all health care decisions.

Our community and our country deserve a world-class, consumer-driven health care system. By empowering patients to have more choices in their health care, we will reduce the cost of care for all Americans and preserve the best health care system in the world. The dramatically increasing cost of health care, troubling classification standards for employer provided plans, and importance of medical research are a few of my top priorities. Reforms should be centered around consumers, demand more transparency in the health care market, facilitate affordable and quality care for those with pre-existing conditions, treat women fairly, and keep the promise of Medicare for our seniors.

Ultimately, affordable health care must be accessible to every hard-working American family. I will continue to work to ensure that our nation’s health care system is serving the best interests of the American people.
