Congressman Yarmuth's 2018 Art Competition

Welcome to the 2018 Congressional Art Competition. Since 1982, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have hosted the annual Competition, which enables high-school students from across the nation to demonstrate their artistic talents before a global audience. 

Earlier this year, students from Louisville high schools were invited to submit artwork for this year's Community Choice Competition. The winning piece will be displayed in Congressman Yarmuth's District Office for one year. 

Voting for this year's competition has ended.

The winner of this year's National Competition is Atherton High senior Emily Aycock, for her work entitled "Rumination"

Color Pencil and Marker "This artwork is a side view of a 1953 Chevy Belair. It is a semigloss black done in color pencil with detailed chrome and red divider also done in semigloss color pencil. The windows are a 'soda bottle' green."

Acrylic Paint "It's an acrylic painting ot a fleur-de-lis, but Cardinal style with bright colors. I also did dots for detail, and sfumato shading for the corners for a smoky look."
Digital Print "Hot air balloons twisted around an axis."
Linoelum Print "The artwork is a black and white linoleum print of a portrait with floral designs and various art supplies coming out from the head area."
Paint "Hats/people looking at Churchill Downs on a sunny, beautiful day. I used expressive paint marks to show the energy of this day."

Sfumato "A cabin in middle of the field. I used sfumato to blend and lift the highlights. There are a pack of birds flying in the air and trees around the cabin to give it a country look."

Paint "It is a mountain landscape with a waterfall in the center. The landscape is a night scene of the base of a mountain. I used technique such as stipling and dabbing for the bushes and trees."
Batik "It's a self portrait, which is inspired by the Oregon mountains where my father lives. It starts with a simple pencil sketch, and then patches of the piece are blocked out with liquified wax and then the remaining cloth is coated in desired ink colors."

Paint and Chalk "Sunset over a lake with a pink/orange sky that reflects over the water. There is a Cyprus Tree with Spanish Moss hanging from the branches. I used color blending with paint and I used white chalk to give the water a proper sheen."

Acrylic Paint "Acrylic painting of a forestry with a stream running down. I used different colors to show distance within the painting. For the flowers, I selected yellow because stands out and goes well within the light greens."

Ink and Watercolor "The image depicts 5 figures representing distinct cultures. The skin is Watercolor, while the rest of the figure remains inked black and white. The portraits are surrounded by the word ART in several different languages and paintbrushes in the background."
