MacArthur Statement on Arrest Made in Connection to Suspicious Packages

October 26, 2018
Press Release

Toms River, New Jersey—Congressman Tom MacArthur released the following statement on the arrest of a suspect linked to the suspicious packages sent to public officials:

I’m so grateful for our nation’s law enforcement. I’d imagine many on this investigation have different political views. However, they put differences aside and worked together for a greater good. In this case, they worked together to arrest a suspect who sent threatening packages to public officials around the nation.

This threat has no place in our society and it must end. This had no place in our society when a man was arrested for threatening my family. This had no place in our society when my good friend, Steve Scalise, was shot during a baseball practice. This had no place in our society when Nancy Pelosi was harassed and threatened during a recent event in Florida – or when Ted Cruz and his wife were intimidated during a private dinner. This is beyond partisanship. There are too many, on both sides of the political divide, who attack and even resort to violence when there is the slightest policy disagreement. We can disagree without being disagreeable and focus on improving the lives of Americans across the country. After all, isn’t that why we are all so interested in politics and government? We all want to make a difference. Now, I know that there are substantial policy differences we must discuss and debate vigorously and honestly. But, these threats, these attacks, the rhetoric on both sides, have just gone too far.
