MacArthur Pleased with FEMA Deadline Extension

Washington, DC – Congressman Tom MacArthur today responded to FEMA extending the deadline for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders to request a review of their claims filed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Following pressure from Congressman MacArthur and 106 local Ocean County elected officials, the extension was announced hours before the deadline with many residents in the Third Congressional District still attempting to file claims reviews.

Additionally, the office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced that it will not require repayment of potential ‘duplicate’ benefits from most homeowners who received increased flood insurance claim payments tied to Sandy. Congressman MacArthur has carefully tracked the recoupment of benefits debate and introduced the Disaster Survivor Benefit Clarification Act to assist those battling with duplication of benefits.

“Families across New Jersey are still dealing with the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy and many of them feel like their help has run out,” said Congressman Tom MacArthur. “An additional 30 days will give these residents more time to consider the options in front of them and continue rebuilding their lives. Our office is ready to help in any way possible to assist before the next deadline because more than anything, we want the residents of South Jersey to know we are fighting for them and will continue fighting until all of the pieces are put back together. I strongly encourage residents to enter the claims review process to ensure they get the money they deserve.”

Hurricane Sandy homeowners now have an additional 30 days to request a review of their claims. To date, more than 20,000 homeowners have asked FEMA to review their claims. So far, 459 claims worth $7.3 million have been approved.
