I work with public data a lot and I am 100% convinced that the more accessible government-collected data is, the more innovation and problem solving we can do

I am not involved directly with the Open Data Science Conference, but I encourage you all to check it out and get your local town or city involved in making their data openhttps://odsc.com/

Include gun permits so the folks at atf in WV don’t need to use microfilm?https://www.gq.com/story/inside-federal-bureau-of-way-too-many-guns …

Unfortunately, this would probably fall under the "private" exception. However, any right thinking person should be in favour of computerised/machine-readable firearm registration and tracking.

Which is interesting given we have no enumerated right to privacy. But yes very likely excluded along your logic.

I'm paying thousands of dollars to get access to election data at the federal, state and local level. Will this force the gov't to provide it in a standard way across the country? A single repository? Again ... just basics ... who's running for office, candidate profile etc??

Stephen Pettigrew just put 2018 election returns up on Dataverse at county level: http://www.stephenpettigrew.com/data/

Yes! But in the long-term, the big game-changer for us is not the data the agencies themselves publish, it's the disclosure forms that individuals/companies/politicians submit to the agencies.

For example, this bill made it possible for us to process Senators' FEC reports within days, rather than weeks, of the filing deadlineshttps://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/senate-e-filing-launches-new-era-campaign-disclosures …

Great - now require that all Electronic Health Records be interoperable! It's a political issue, not a technical issue. And the bulk of EHR's have been paid for by the government one way or another. http://buddshenkin.blogspot.com/2017/11/weaponizing-ehr.html …

@dhjshi_shi or anyone else who is interested in reading more, the text can be found here: https://bit.ly/2By8ZBl . Title II, OPEN Government Data Act. Hope that helps!
