If the President gets his way and the government shuts down, 380,000+ federal employees will be furloughed and 420,000+ more will be working without pay over the holidays. Merry Christmas.

This is super simple. The Senate passed a temporary budget by voice vote (not a single R objected). The House was ready to pass it. Then Trump pulled the rug out from under the deal and now we're headed for a shutdown. Just like he promised a week ago.

You own the shutdown—your own words, . The Senate UNANIMOUSLY passed a bipartisan solution to avoid a shutdown. Then you threw another temper tantrum and convinced the House to ignore that compromise.

The President has had the last two years of his Presidency, with full GOP control of the government, to make a deal on border security. Instead, he waited until the last possible minute before threatening a shutdown if he doesn’t get his way. This is not leadership.

"While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies," Mattis wrote in a letter to Trump.

This is scary. Secretary Mattis has been an island of stability amidst the chaos of the Trump administration. As we’ve seen with the President’s haphazard approach to Syria, our national defense is too important to be subjected to the President’s erratic whims.

Glad to hear the President signed the 2018 Farm Bill into law today. I’m proud to support this bipartisan legislation that invests in rural America and supports Virginia’s farmers and agricultural businesses throughout the Commonwealth.

Great news: the House just passed the Act, honoring the late Ashanti Billie, which I helped pass in the Senate earlier this month. I’m hopeful the President will sign it into law soon, so its alert system for missing adults can begin saving lives around the country.

We have to punch back against China’s malign activities – but we also have to do more than play defense if we’re going to truly check China’s bad behavior.

While legal action is important, a truly effective response will require a coordinated approach with our allies and a comprehensive strategy to protect our national security and enhance U.S. competitiveness and resiliency.

The DOJ, and in particular Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, should be congratulated for their work. DOJ’s recent moves to hold China accountable are important in exposing some of the threats posed by China as it attempts to pursue economic and technological dominance over the US.
