Artists

The designs on our coins and medals are more than drawings. They express the values, aspirations, and shared heritage of our nation.

Artists are an essential part of the United States Mint coin production team. They help ensure our country’s coins and medals illustrate the essence and story of America.

United States Mint Sculptor-Engravers

Sculptor-Engravers create and submit designs for consideration and sculpt the models required to produce coins and medals. Based at our Philadelphia facility, the Sculptor-Engravers have broad experience in medallic art and play a critical role in coin and medal development.

Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Artists

Established in 2003, the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) contracts talented, professional American artists who represent diverse backgrounds and a variety of interests. These artists work with Mint staff to create and submit new designs for our coins and medals.

AIP artists’ designs are found on many coins and medals. Artist information is included in historical documents, Certificates of Authenticity, and promotional materials. In most cases, the artist’s initials appear on the final coins or medals, along with the initials of the Sculptor-Engraver who sculpted the selected design.

When needed, we invite artists from across the country to apply to the AIP through a “Call for Artists.” The Mint is not currently accepting applications for the AIP. Please watch this space for future opportunities.
