Fogarty helps train researchers to address rise in HIV in high-risk populations in the U.S.-Mexico border region
Fogarty has made significant investments in research training to combat HIV/AIDS. The AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) was the first of its kind and has built public health capacity in 100 low- and middle-income countries. A second program, International Implementation, Clinical, Operational and Health Services Research Training Award for AIDS and Tuberculosis (IICOHRTA-AIDS/TB) was developed to strengthen the capacity to conduct clinical research and implementation science, including operations and health services research focused on HIV infection, TB, and HIV/TB co-infection prevention, care and treatment. The programs have been combined to form the Fogarty HIV Research Training Program.
The lack of health professionals trained to cope with AIDS remains an obstacle to in sub-Saharan Africa, where the illness is the leading cause of death. To address this, HHS partnered with the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to transform medical education in sub-Saharan Africa. The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI), administered by Fogarty and HRSA, is designed to increase the quantity and quality of health care workers and researchers throughout the region.
