Definition of Reuse

"Reuse" is the second R in the 3R hierarchy and is more important that recycling because it uses less energy and resources. Reuse is using an item again, either for its original purpose or for a similar purpose, without significantly altering the physical form of the item. Reuse is not technically recycling, because recycling alters the physical form of an item. Reuse prevents items from becoming waste, and is a form of waste prevention.

There are many locations on Kaua‘i that specialize in Reuse and benefit charitable organization at the same time through donations from items sold. Sorting and donating used items instead of disposing of them, and shopping at reuse stores instead of buying new, is a great way to save landfill space and precious resources!
