The vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the nation's second-highest-ranking military officer, responsible for overseeing joint military requirements, representing the military in National Security Council deputies meetings, and performing other duties as directed by the chairman.

Air Force Gen. Paul J. Selva recently said, “Only 1 percent of our population today will ever wear the uniform of this nation in any of its incarnations — soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, active, Guard or Reserve. That 1 percent, those sons and daughters of our citizens, are the treasure of this nation.” Selva became the 10th vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2015. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he is a command pilot with more than 3,200 flight hours.
Established in January 1942 to expedite strategic coordination during World War II, the Joint Chiefs of Staff have been at the center of U.S. military planning ever since.
