Nevada State Veterans Home volunteers are respected and appreciated. Through their companionship, attentiveness, warmth and assistance, they enhance the overall quality of life for residents at the Home. Their donation of time and talent is valued by team members and residents.
The Nevada State Veterans Home Volunteer Program was established to support the Home’s mission of “Caring for America’s Heroes” by integrating well trained, highly motivated, and deeply committed volunteers with NSVH team members and residents.
It’s easy to become one of the more than 100 volunteers who share their time and talent with the Home’s residents and there are many ways to get involved. Volunteer assignments are made according to individual skills, abilities, and desires. Examples of valuable services provided by volunteers include:
Companions – Visit with residents, providing companionship and connections to the world through discussion of current events, writing letters, reading books, etc.
Bingo Callers – Assist in transporting residents to and from Bingo, distributing Bingo cards, and assist residents in playing the game.
Canteen Support – Act as cashier and assist patrons with purchases.
Outings Support – Assist residents during Facility-sanctioned outings to area restaurants, events, stores, parks, etc. w Event Support – Assist with programs, including entertainment, Chapel services, group activities, and special events, on and off site, weekdays and weekends.
Clerical Support – Assist various NSVH departments with projects, including filing, copying, typing, phone calls, etc.
Transporters – Help transport residents to and from events and activities.

Volunteers are recruited from the community, including veteran service organizations, active and retired military branches, service clubs, schools, and churches. Volunteer training begins upon completion of an application and acceptance as a volunteer. For the safety of our residents, volunteers must complete a background check, including fingerprinting, and a two-step TB test.
Once these steps are completed, volunteers are scheduled to attend a one-day orientation, which includes a privacy compliance in-service, Facility tour, and Fire/Safety Training. Additional training is provided, one-on-one, to familiarize the volunteer with the specific area they will be supporting.
