  • Antenatal Late Preterm Steroids (ALPS): A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial
    This research study will attempt to determine whether steroids, compared with no steroids, decrease babies’ need for oxygen support when given to pregnant women at least 12 to 24 hours before they deliver at 34 weeks to 36 weeks gestation. The research study will also collect information on whether steroids improve the chances that the baby will not get sick from other causes.
  • Global Network Implementation of Helping Babies Breathe (HBB)
    The primary purpose of this evaluation is to test the impact of training birth attendants in the HBB and Essential Newborn Care curricula on perinatal mortality rates among infants born weighing at least 1,500 grams.
  • Minimally Invasive Surfactant Therapy Followed by CPAP (MISTCPAP)
    The investigators are studying a method of minimally invasive surfactant therapy followed by early continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in preterm infants with high risk of respiratory distress syndrome for improving the outcomes for and reducing the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
  • Study to Improve Survival Among HIV-Exposed Infants in Botswana (Mpepu)
    The purpose of this study is to find ways to improve infant health and survival among infants whose mothers are HIV-infected, but who do not themselves have HIV. The trial tests drug regimens against HIV and neutropenia, as well as exclusive breastfeeding–promotion interventions to combat anemia.
