Cancer Prevention and Control

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Georgia.  In 2015, an estimated 16,496 Georgians died of cancer. The two leading cancer killers in Georgia are lung and colorectal cancers. And, about 45,000 Georgians are diagnosed with invasive cancer each year.

The most recent five-year state cancer plan, Georgia Cancer Plan: 2014-2019, was developed by multiple stakeholders from the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium. The plan lays out Georgia’s approach to preventing and controlling cancer.  The plan highlights the following priority areas of action—

  1. Cancer Risk Reduction: Tobacco and Obesity
  2. Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination
  3. Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening
  4. Colorectal Cancer Screening
  5. Lung Cancer Screening
  6. Quality of Care in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
  7. Palliative Care and Survivorship
  8. Patient Case Management and Care Coordination
