TBI is an injury from a blow, jolt, or penetrating object that disrupts normal functioning of the brain. Causes of TBI include falls, car accidents, sports-related impacts, and penetrating injuries. A TBI can be mild, sometimes called a concussion; serious, causing long-term problems; or any level in between. The NICHD is one of many NIH branches and other federal agencies working to understand and prevent TBI, and to improve outcomes for people affected by TBI and related conditions.
