Learn how to use web-based tools to analyze National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data available to the public. Consult user-friendly quick reference guides, modules, tutorials, online help, and other information to guide your analysis.
The data tools offer researchers the opportunity to become familiar with NAEP analysis procedures and to conduct preliminary explorations of hypotheses before obtaining a license from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to access restricted-use datasets.
Note that any analysis generated by the data tools does not replace independent validation by a researcher’s own software.
The
NAEP Primer guides new researchers through the intricacies of the NAEP database and NAEP analysis procedures.
The NAEP Data Explorer (NDE) creates customizable tables and graphics to display NAEP results. NDE provides results of an assessment across multiple years, broken down across various student groups. For some assessments, results are available by state or select urban district. Results can be filtered by content areas.
For in-depth exploration, NDE offers significance testing, gap analysis, and regression analysis. You can export tables and charts to Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PDFs. Special versions of the NDE focus on the High School Transcript Study (HSTS) and the National Indian Education Study (NIES).
The NAEP website offers additional tools for analyzing NAEP data. Read a description of the data tools that assist in the data analysis available to the public, and consult the tutorials and quick reference guides:
