The NICHD conducts and supports a variety of clinical research projects related to sleep. Select a link below to learn more about these projects.

Featured NICHD Clinical Trials

  • Metabolic Study of Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Sleep Apnea
NICHD-supported investigators are currently studying the metabolic (use of energy) and hormonal features of sleep problems, including sleep apnea, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Metabolic sleep abnormalities related to sleep disruption are particularly evident in people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which has traditionally been considered a disorder more likely to be present in men than women. Women with PCOS, however, are particularly susceptible to OSA, having at least five times the risk of this disorder as compared with obese women without PCOS. The study will examine the role of different metabolic factors in increasing the risk of sleep apnea in this understudied population.
