Preterm Labor and Birth: Clinical Trials

The NICHD conducts and supports a variety of clinical research related to preterm labor and birth. Select a link below to learn more about these projects.

Featured NICHD Clinical Trials

  • Pravastatin for Prevention of Preeclampsia
The purpose of this study is to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters and collect preliminary safety data for pravastatin when used as a prophylactic daily treatment in pregnant women at high risk for preeclampsia, a common cause of medically induced preterm delivery.
  • Prematurity and Infant Neurological Disorders
Prematurity is a leading risk factor for cerebral palsy. Two-thirds of preterm neonates are born to mothers with preterm labor with intact membranes or preterm premature rupture of membranes. A growing body of evidence suggests that these conditions are heterogeneous. This is an observational cohort study designed to identify the mechanisms of disease in patients with preterm labor/contractions and preterm premature rupture of membranes and to describe the relationship between clinical, biochemical, histological, and biophysical parameters and the development of infant neurological disorders.
  • Biological Mechanisms Underlying Preterm Birth
This study aims to investigate the basic mechanisms of preterm labor by systematically cataloging the changes in expression levels of all expressed genes whose sequences are available. The goals will be accomplished by using microarray technology followed by subsequent confirmative or complementary analyses.
  • Biological Markers of Disease in the Prediction of Preterm Delivery, Preeclampsia and Intra-Uterine Growth Retardation: A Longitudinal Study
The main purpose of this study is to perform an early and comprehensive exploration of maternal and fetal factors that predict the subsequent development of preterm delivery, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction, so that early medical interventions may be tested in patients at high and low risk for adverse perinatal outcome.
  • Pharmacokinetics of Sildenafil in Premature Infants
The purpose of this study is to learn more about the safety and dosing of sildenafil in infants. Sildenafil, otherwise marketed as Viagra, has been used to treat infants with lung troubles.
  • Preemie Hypothermia for Neonatal Encephalopathy (NE)
This study is a randomized, controlled trial to assess the safety and effectiveness of whole body hypothermia for 72 hours in preterm infants who are 33 to 35 weeks of gestational age and who present at less than 6 hours postnatal age with moderate to severe NE.
  • An Open Label Study to Describe the Pharmacokinetics of Cefazolin in Preterm Neonates
This study will investigate the pharmacokinetics and safety of cefazolin in infants less than 121 days of age and less than 28 weeks gestation with suspected sepsis.
