Reading and reading disorders are a particular area of interest for the NICHD, which has a diverse research portfolio in learning, learning disabilities, and normal and abnormal brain function and development. Reading disorders, commonly referred to as dyslexia, are a spectrum of brain-based developmental difficulties in understanding the written word. The NICHD’s research interests in this area include understanding the biological bases of written language processing, elucidating the development of reading disorders, and evaluating methods to treat these disorders.
