Zika in Infants and Pregnancy (ZIP) Study
NIH launched a multi-country study called Zika in Infants and Pregnancy, or ZIP, in collaboration with Fundacao Oswaldo Cruz-Fiocruz (Fiocruz), a national scientific research organization linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Researchers will evaluate the extent of health risks that Zika virus infection poses to pregnant women and their developing fetuses and infants. The study opened in Puerto Rico and expanded to several locations in Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, and Nicaragua—areas that are experiencing active local transmission of the virus. Researchers aim to enroll 10,000 pregnant women in their first trimester and follow them throughout their pregnancies. After birth, the infants will be followed for at least one year.
