The Respiratory Diseases Unit strives to reduce the following infections and conditions by conducting surveillance, investigating outbreaks, participating in applied public health research and educating healthcare providers and the public to prevent disease.
- Novel influenza A Virus Infections, including H3N2v and Avian Influenza
Surveillance
All Georgia physicians, laboratories, and other health care providers are required by law to report notifiable diseases. Cases may be reported through the State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SENDSS) or they may also be directly reported to the Acute Disease Epidemiology Section at the Georgia Department of Public Health or local Health District. Legionella and Novel influenza are to be reported within 7 days of disease onset, but seasonal influenza and RSV are not reportable.
Georgia tracks the listed pathogens statewide using multiple overlapping surveillance systems. As notifiable diseases, all listed pathogens are under passive surveillance statewide. Additionally, there are several surveillance systems in place to monitor influenza and RSV.
