Laparotomy vs. Drainage for Infants With Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEST)
This study is comparing the effectiveness of two surgical procedures, laparotomy and drainage, both commonly used to treat NEC and isolated intestinal perforations, in extremely low birth weight infants (less than 1,000 grams). The primary outcome to be measured is impairment-free survival at 18 to 22 months of age. -
Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation in Newborn Infants at Risk for NEC
This study is characterizing the time to maturation of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation in premature and term infants less than 1 year old undergoing elective surgery. The purpose is to determine whether NETs contribute to development of NEC by inappropriately releasing degradative proteins and tissue-destructive enzymes into the premature digestive tract.
