Appliances, otherwise known as "white goods" are enamel-coated electrical and mechanical household appliances made primarily of metals.  White goods on Kaua'i are separated, processed, and recycled for scrap metal.

They are segregated into two categories: Type 1 - containing no refrigerant (i.e. water heaters, clothes washers and dryers, stoves and ranges), and Type 2 - containing refrigerant (i.e. refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners). 

Please make every effort to reuse appliances by repairing or donating them prior to disposal.  Please empty refrigerators, of food prior to drop off.  For assistance in identifying reuse options, call the County Recycling Office at 241-4841.

White goods from Commercial sources must be transported to the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility 3951 Puhi Road. White goods with refrigerants are accepted for a fee of $20 per unit for other items see the estimated price list (Non-refrigerant charges to begin May, 15 2017).

White goods from residents can be recycled, FREE of charge at locations listed below:

Propane Tank Recycling
Propane tanks (whether pressurized or de-pressurized) are accepted from residents free of charge at the Hanalei Transfer Station, Kapa'a Transfer Station, Lihue Transfer Station, and Hanapepe Transfer Station. Tanks larger than 10 gallons are not accepted. Home Depot offers a discount on a new tank if you bring your old tank in for recycling. Call for details at 632-2740.

Commercial haulers are required to dispose of depressurized tanks at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility. Propane Tanks are accepted at the Puhi Metals Facility if, and only if, the valve has been removed so that it can be visually determined that there are absolutely no fluids contained within the cylinder please see the estimated price list for drop off at Puhi Metals (fee to begin May, 15 2017). Please refer to the Yellow Pages under the heading “Gas-Liquefied Petroleum Bottled and Bulk Retail,” for companies that can perform the service of depressurizing propane tanks.
