Research in pharmacology, particularly for pregnant women and children, has advanced significantly in recent years, due in large part to the commitment and support of the NICHD. The NICHD created the Obstetric & Pediatric Pharmacology Branch to support pharmacologic research for pregnant women and children. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has partnered with the NICHD to ensure that drug companies provide evidence from research that a drug is safe for both the mother and the fetus before it can be approved.
